Microsoft's unified Copilot app makes Teams smarter for calls and meetings, but business text messaging from a company number is still missing. Here's what to do.
This week, Microsoft began rolling out one of its most significant AI moves yet: merging its consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into a single unified experience, heading toward a Copilot “super app.” Teams is at the center of it. Copilot is now embedded in calls, meetings, and channels. AI-powered call summaries, real-time transcription, and intelligent routing are all getting sharper.
For businesses using Microsoft 365, this makes Teams a more capable communication hub than ever. But as Microsoft’s AI stack grows more powerful, there’s one channel that’s still not part of the standard Teams experience: text messaging from your business phone number. That gap is costing businesses more than they realize.
Microsoft’s unified Copilot rollout, which began August 13, 2026, consolidates its consumer and commercial AI experiences into one app. For Teams specifically, the practical changes include:
Microsoft is also cutting features that failed to gain traction: Group Chat, Deep Research, and AI-generated podcasts are all being retired as of August 18, 2026. The consolidation signals where Microsoft is doubling down and calling and meeting intelligence are clearly at the top of that list.
Here’s what the Copilot super app doesn’t include: the ability to send and receive text messages from your business phone number.
Microsoft’s native SMS feature in Teams is limited to Calling Plan numbers in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada; even then, it’s a narrow implementation. There’s no shared team inbox, no full audit trail, and no integration with CRM or workflow tools. For most US businesses using Operator Connect, texting from a business number in Teams simply isn’t available by default.
So while your team’s calls in Teams get AI summaries and your meetings get Copilot-powered notes, the texts your customers send to your business number land somewhere else entirely, usually on someone’s personal phone, outside any business system.
Customer texting is no longer optional for most businesses. Across healthcare scheduling, legal follow-up, property management, and financial services, customers now expect to reach a business by text the same way they’d text a person. When there’s no business texting infrastructure in place, employees fill the gap with personal phones.
That creates three problems that compound over time:
None of these problems are solved by making Teams calling smarter. They are specifically a text messaging infrastructure problem, one that grows as your team relies more on Microsoft’s communication stack.
Mobex text messaging gives your business phone numbers the ability to send and receive texts, with a shared team inbox, full message history, and clean operation alongside your existing Teams setup.
For businesses already using Teams Phone via Operator Connect or Direct Routing, Mobex works alongside your existing call infrastructure. Key capabilities include:
Adding Mobex text messaging doesn’t replace your Teams calling setup. It completes it, giving customers one number that does both.
Does Microsoft Teams support texting natively?
Teams has a limited native SMS feature for Calling Plan numbers in the US, but it lacks a shared inbox, full audit trail, and is unavailable for most Operator Connect setups. Most US businesses need a dedicated business text messaging solution alongside Teams.
Will the Copilot super app eventually include business texting?
Microsoft’s current roadmap focuses on AI-enhanced calling and meeting features. Business text messaging from business phone numbers (particularly for Operator Connect customers) is not currently part of announced Teams plans.
Is using personal phones for business texting a compliance risk?
Yes. Regulated industries (healthcare, finance, legal) have specific requirements around retaining business communication records. Personal phone texting creates a gap in that record. TCPA opt-out rules also apply to all business SMS, and enforcing them requires a system that captures consent and opt-outs reliably.
How does Mobex text messaging work alongside Teams?
Mobex text messaging runs alongside your Teams Phone setup. Your Teams calling continues as normal; Mobex provides the text messaging layer for the same business numbers. The two work independently and complement each other as a complete communications se
